Asymmetrical Club Chairs {Upholstery Complete!}

Newly-Upholstered-Vintage-Club-ChairsWow, this is certainly the longest it has ever taken me to bring a vintage find back to life! Can you believe it was Autumn four years ago when I was searching eBay for lady liberty statues and somehow I clicked, clicked, clicked my way into a pair of Mid Century Modern Asymmetrical Club Chairs? They were definitely a good purchase with their Vladimir Kagan inspired lines – it just took a while for me to realize what they’d become.Statue-of-Liberty-CollectionFrom the get go I knew that I wanted to do these chairs right, not just settle on a “good enough for now” fabric. I kept my eyes peeled for something that would work in our personal interior design scheme for the long haul. I know, over time material becomes sun faded and worn, but I wanted that to be the reason they get reworked again. (If I learned one thing from the ‘so ugly they are cute sofas‘ it’s that there is no need to hurry. From the moment the fabric arrived, I have not been happy with the linen slipcovers. I was too eager to finish that room and the entire exercise was just plain wasteful.) I was tempted to upholster the chairs in a solid velvet or chenille – something that had a warm, fuzzy feel to it. Peacock Blue? Emerald Green? Dusty Plum?Jennifer-Aniston-Beverly-Hills-Home-in-Architectural-DigestWant-to-Sit-Pretty-Like-Jennifer-AnistonI knew I didn’t want to go down the Mohair route –  just in case I wanted them live in a room next to the Edward Wormley for Dunbar Sofa some day. I adore it as a fabric, but really didn’t want the entire room to be an ode to Mohair, you know? Besides, they were going to take a whopping 13 yards for the pair, so the price had to be right for the budget as well.Irwin-Feld-Design-Edward-Wormley-for-Dunbar-SofaJust shortly after the Asymmetrical Club Chair purchase, I inherited the leather club chairs that are in our fireplace room. The urge to reupholster the eBay pair and work them into our decor was far less pressing once these guys arrived. The Asymmetrical Club Chairs found their way into our barn, which doubles as the Mister’s office and our work out area. And then eventually we built out more closets in the barn, and I schlepped them to our storage facility where they sat for about a year while we messed around with the #ABCDJewelBox.Heirloom-Leather-Club-ChairsSo here we are in the Brooklyn Heights apartment. Finally it was time for them to come out of storage and help make up the living room arrangement. About the same time we moved, I had a meeting with Romo at The Country House to see their latest fabric introductions. It was then that a fuzzy, soft chenille stripe called Zella Cayenne crossed my desk. The colors that run through this fabric are reminiscent of the ones that I love in our vintage poster collection. I have no plans to part with this colorful collection of art work, so it will always (to some extent) inform the color palette I am working with in our home. asymmetric-club-chairs-1Romo-Black-Zella-CayenneABCDdesigns-Vintage-Poster-Collection-Soho-LoftKnowing we’d be moving to the New Old Stone House eventually, I sent the chairs off with Beatrice Upholstery, of Brooklyn. They arrived to the apartment yesterday afternoon and I couldn’t be happier with the work she did on them. I had her put new feather and foam cushions on them because the original ones were pretty beat. They feel and look brand new again, at the fraction of the price of buying brand new club chairs of this size and quality. I couldn’t be happier with the finished result!Romo-Black-ZellaChenille-Upholstered-Club-Chairs
